Is HMPV like Covid-19? How concerned should we be?

Fears of a Covid-19-style pandemic are overblown, experts said, noting that pandemics are usually caused by new pathogens, which is not the case for HMPV (human metapneumovirus), and that pandemics occur roughly every 100 years.
HMPV is present globally and has existed for decades. It was first isolated in the Netherlands in 2001. This means that people around the world have “some pre-existing immunity due to previous exposure”.
“Almost every child will have been infected with HMPV by the age of five, and we can expect to continue to have multiple reinfections throughout life.”
“So overall, there are currently no signs of a more serious global issue.”
However, it advises standard general precautions such as wearing a mask in crowded places, avoiding crowds where possible if someone is at higher risk of more serious illness from respiratory virus infections, practicing good hand hygiene and getting a flu shot.
